What does Georgia have to offer that is special and unique?

Svaneti

We all know that Georgia’s rich history provides travelers with almost unlimited cultural, archeological and historical tour options. In terms of natural diversity, Georgia has it all – snowy mountains, high mountain woods, lakes and rivers; wide valleys, green hills and semi-deserts; and of course, the Black Sea coast. The challenge is deciding what to fit in during your trip.
Sustainable tourism
Pursuers of sustainable tourism and responsible travel have several options in Georgia. The local people of Kakheti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Samegrelo, Guria and Adjara regions are ready to welcome guests with a higher level of environmental and cultural awareness. Farmers, wine, cheese and honey-makers, tea and tangerine growers, artisans and small hospitality entrepreneurs are all keen to share their products and hospitality.
Health tourism
Local tours in Georgia can also be health-oriented. Healing mineral waters, along with clean air have made places like Borjomi, Bakuriani, Sairme and Abastumani true health resorts. You can pamper yourself for a week receiving health treatments and taking walks in the high mountain pine-tree forests.

There’s so much to see, do and enjoy in this small, yet incredibly diverse country. Whatever takes your fancy, be it history, adventure, mountains, seaside, natural wonders or human endeavor – there’s something for everyone. Why choose Tbilisi as your next travel destination?

World media brings Georgia into the spotlight.
Recently several international media included this small Caucasus country into their top travel destination for 2018. National Geographic named Georgia and its capital city Tbilisi among places one needs to visit this year highlighting diverse architecture and famous Sulphur-bath houses.
Trendy VOGUE magazine put Georgia as number one choice in their “Hottest travel destinations” list, making emphasis on stylish new hotels, clubs, public spaces, as well as traditional Georgian wine – something that locals deservedly consider as national pride. Editors made a separate comment about recent trend among tourists: “Georgia is primed to become a new winter playground for hard-core skiers and snowboarders looking to access untouched terrain in the Caucasus Mountains.”
“A must-see destination” – the bold statement made by The Spaces, and published by CNN Styles about Tbilisi is something that needs to be personally experienced and confirmed. Author puts Tbilisi into their “Metropolises on the up. 2018” chart and claims that Georgian capital is becoming one of the world’s most coveted hubs for fashion, arts and creativity.
Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine in cooperation with Lonely Planet made a short video selecting 10 best cities in the world according to travelers’ interests. Tbilisi is in there too, under #5, as the best place for wine. Wine tours to Georgia, being organized all year round, are indeed becoming more and more popular each year. Georgian traditional winemaking is something yet to be discovered by mass travelers.
Media giant Financial Times is the latest among those to state that Georgia tours should be on travelers’ agenda in 2018. Including country into Top 8 list FT quotes one of the industry professionals saying, “take day walks among snow-capped peaks punctuated by sumptuous picnics, visits to vineyards, old villages and churches.”

Travel to Georgia: planning a trip budget

Updated on January 2, 2020
Planning a travel budget – this is without a doubt one of the most common questions all travelers wonder about when preparing for a trip. Georgia tour price is based on a number of aspects. We briefly explain how we calculate our tour costs on the Frequently asked questions page. But here we would like to expand the issue by speaking about planning a travel budget in general – what should be considered, what type of expenses should be taken into account, etc.

So, you made a decision of choosing Georgia as your next travel destination. You have read all about local sights and probably already have a tour program in mind. But how much will the Georgia trip cost in total? How much money you would need for daily expenses? What currency to bring? Will your credit card be enough or would you need to bring cash too? Spendings while you travel can vary greatly based on your travel style and preferences. So it’s always handy to have a travel budget idea before the trip.
Consider spendings on getting to Georgia
First you need to get to Georgia, and unless you’re located on a few hours driving distance from us, this will probably be a significant part of your trip budget. If you’re coming from whole other continent, this probably means taking a flight. Georgia’s major airports are Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi. Read our flights to Georgia page for more information. You can try different flight options using this handy service for flights search to get an estimate for what this will cost.
Consider spendings on local transportation – covered in our standard tour price
Most probably you will need transportation once you arrive in Georgia. Public transportation is a good option and

И, конечно же, Международный аэропорт Батуми – лучшее место, чтобы начать свое путешествие в этом регионе. Discover Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in One Go

06/02/2020
Caucasus guide

In the recent past, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan have emerged as popular must-visit tourist destinations not only in the Caucasus region but the whole world. Touring the three countries in one go offers an invaluable, once-in-lifetime opportunity to indulge in uniquely distinct cuisines and traditional customs of the Eurasian culture.

Practical Benefits of Discovering Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in One Go
Apart from the educational benefits of visiting all the most important historical sites in one tour, discovering Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan all at once offers several practical benefits. For one, having to travel from far away destinations such as the US, the UK, or Australia, it is more beneficial to discover all three countries on a single trip instead of traveling back and forth to visit each country separately.
This way, you can experience the whole Caucasus region and not just one country. The region is incredibly diverse with each of the three countries having its own language, culture, and religion. This means that lumping Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan into a single trip will allow you to sample various distinct cultural sites, historical monuments, and customs based on differences in culture and religion between the countries.
Even though Georgia and Armenia share a long history and religious beliefs leading to overlapping in certain aspects, this similarity is countered by the fascinating landscape in Azerbaijan and distinct culture of the Azerbaijanis. Experiencing all three countries will offer you a balanced overview of the region.

South Caucasus countries

Discovering all three countries in one go makes sense logistically since they are small enough to hit all must-visit sites within a short time in a single trip. To understand the true meaning of distinct cuisine with a variety of delicious

Responsible Tourism Options in Georgia

Responsible travel and sustainable tourism are the choice of travelers who care about the global environment. But not all prospect travelers aware of practical implementation of such journeys. Further down this story we will showcase responsible tourism options in Georgia on one of our bestselling Georgia tour examples.
Global threat and local impact
It is obvious now that our Planet is under threat from environmental degradation and climate change. Not for all, though… But still. From Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, wildfires, extreme flood or extreme drought, are increasingly becoming the norm. It is the responsibility of each individual and all organizations to contribute in global efforts to rehabilitate our environment and halt, and reverse global warming.
Additionally, climate change, coupled with globalization, is threatening local communities who rely heavily on indigenous produce and products. Climate change is making it harder by the day for local communities to earn a living in a highly competitive globalized marketplace where exotic foreign products are readily available. Threats posed by climate change, environmental degradation, and globalization are not restricted to a specific region but affect communities across the world, including in Georgia. This is where responsible tourism can be a way to improve the situation. One of many.

Getting to Azerbaijan and Armenia via Georgia by train

Getting around in Caucasus
Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia currently are gaining momentum in their popularity as one of the major tourist destinations. So it becomes natural for travelers to look for the ways to get there. And while all three capital cities host international airports with quite a versatile choice of flights from around the globe, frequency of those flights leave very little room for journey flexibility.
On the other side, though, the situation brings up an opportunity to discover a bit more of the Caucasus. Imagine that you set your vacation plans to Azerbaijan but can not find a suitable and convenient flight option – you may also want to look up flights to Georgia. Two neighboring countries are very well connected. Well, first of all, there is a daily flight between Tbilisi and Baku. And it is only about 40 minutes of your time in the air. Another option to consider would be a bus. Comfortable coaches depart from Tbilisi to Baku, and return, for a number of times during the day.
Consider train journey
But, evidently, the most convenient, and thus the most popular option is getting to Baku from Tbilisi by overnight train. Although train coaches are relatively old Soviet-model types, they are very well modernized, clean and air-conditioned. Each train consist of three different travel classes. First is “SV” (from Russian “spulny vagon” – sleeping wagon) or “Compartment for 2”; another class is “Coupe” or “Compartment for 4” and finally what is called “Platskart” or “Open carriage”.
And the fact that this train journey is happening overnight adds to the options general attractiveness. First of all, you don’t waste precious daylight time on the road, and you save on your hotel accommodation. For at least one night during your journey. Same applies to trains running

Ancient Georgian village Mutso

Mutso – an ancient Georgian village – wins European heritage awards

The project for the restoration of the fortress village of Mutso in Khevsureti will be awarded the Europa Nostra prize in Paris.Winning is always pleasing, especially when it comes to the historical and cultural heritage of the country 😊
The Europa Nostra project is called the “European Oscar” of cultural heritage protection. Independent experts from different countries of Europe annually select winners in four categories: “Preservation of Heritage”, “Study of Heritage”, “Selfless Labor”, and “Education, Training, Public Awareness”.
The jury noted that “this project addresses the depopulation of mountain communities, a challenge that is found throughout Europe. The restoration of this heritage has created an awareness among the local community of their intangible heritage and the history of the people of the Caucasus, in turn encouraging their re-engagement with this heritage. The continuation of traditional craftsmanship has been prioritised, ensuring its future maintenance. The overcoming of many challenges to the rehabilitation, including the difficult terrain and lack of infrastructure, is commendable.”

When Is The Best Time To Travel Georgia?

Georgia’s All 4 Seasons Compared

Most online sources say that the best times to visit Georgia are late spring and autumn. But is it so? We would say that Georgia is a great holiday destination throughout the year, with summer and autumn being of course most popular (with milder temperatures and good conditions for outdoor activities and travel), but winter and spring also have their advantages.

Let’s go through all four seasons now and see what this country has to offer in each of them, so you can decide for yourself – When is the best time to visit Georgia?

First, let’s see what Georgia has to offer during Summer months.

Basically, it’s the busiest time for tourism, with full resorts along the Black Sea Coast and crowded major cities. Prices obviously go up, and it can be harder to move around – purchasing tickets for domestic trains is especially challenging (side note: do that at least 2-3 weeks in advance). The weather is hot, making mountain hiking and beach lounging ideal, but the cities, especially Tbilisi, can be uncomfortably hot.

But! Despite the heat, summer has advantages like open mountain roads and vibrant local markets with delicious fruits. It’s a perfect time for exploring relatively cooler places like Tskaltubio, Chiatura or the alpine charms of Kazbegi and Mestia, or pine groves and healing waters of Borjomi. Black Sea towns and villages like Batumi, Gonio, Kobuleti, Shekvetili, and Chakvi are very popular in Summer, offering sunbathing, concerts, and hiking activities. So, Summer in Georgia, especially in July and August, is great for Black Sea relaxation, high mountain adventures, and cooler and lesser known locations, mineral water resorts, and summer festivals.

Georgia is #1 among emerging travel destinations in 2020

Travel to Georgia is your way of fighting global overtourism problem.
Led by Nate Hake, creator and author of Travel Lemming, a group of 30+ best-travelled bloggers from all over the world compiled a list of TOP-30 emerging travel destinations. Instead of planning a trip to a tourists-filled country experienced travel practitioners suggest turning your eye on one of underrated world gems. And Georgia is leading the list.

Georgia travel descriptions, suggested locations to visit and general advices provided by most of the jury panel members on their websites echoes with our vision of tourism. As pioneers of truly responsible travel in Georgia we’re delighted to see that likeminded opinion leaders are noticing our small country 🙂

As Kate McCulley pointed out:

Authors also stressed on what they think major benefits of travel to Georgia. Like competitive mountain sceneries, truly bohemian Old Town of Tbilisi, traditional winemaking and relatively modest budget required… We just want to add that Georgia will surely lead the way of sustainable tourism in the region. This country has all options needed to attract travelers with a higher level of awareness.

If asked, we would suggest Machakhela protected areas, Martvili canyon or Lagodekhi as a must-visit places; as well as tangerine harvest or organic tea-farm experience as things to surely do in Georgia. And don’t be misled by When to visit advice. Ask us and we arrange an exciting journey in time of a year (wink)!

Top-10 Experiences in Georgia

Georgia To-Do List

If you’re planning a trip to Georgia and now wondering what are the top things to do in this country, then you’re in for a treat. Read the list of top-10 experiences you shouldn’t miss while exploring this South Caucasus treasure. Visit ancient cave towns, stroll along the Black Sea coast, and ride cable cars used as public transport.

Visit Tskaltubo

Entry number 1 on your must-visit list is Tskaltubo, a town that holds a unique place in history. Once the preferred destination for Soviet VIPs and their families throughout most of the 20th century, Tskhaltubo was renowned for its ‘Waters of Immortality’ and stood as a premier relaxation spot in the USSR. However, today, the town has undergone a transformation into a semi-abandoned haven. Its once-luxurious health resorts and bathhouses now stand empty and partially destroyed, making Tskhaltubo a distinctive “dark tourism” spot in Georgia.

Situated just 20 minutes from Kutaisi, Tskaltubo is easily accessible by public transport, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. The town provides a fascinating journey into the past, offering a captivating experience for urban explorers, architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and, of course, Instagram bloggers. Laden with history and exuding a unique atmosphere, Tskhaltubo is a snapshot of a bygone era.

It’s important to note that Tskhaltubo is undergoing rapid changes, with private investors taking charge of more health resorts and embarking on reconstruction projects. This means there is a limited window to witness the town in its current semi-abandoned state. Therefore, be sure to include Tskhaltubo on your list of must-visit places in Georgia before its transformation is complete.

Tour Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and support Australia bushfire recovery

17/02/2020
Caucasus guide

Our small team is based in Georgia. And we know what it’s like to live through wildfires – in 2017 the most recent and arguably the most massive forest fire hit one of the country’s gem: Borjomi Gorge. Some of our travelers during the past year have come across our initiative to support local reforestation through booking our 14-day long Georgia group tour. And we’re continuing this initiative in 2020.
This time we are partnering with a not-for-profit organisation in Australia called Conservation Volunteers (CV). We believe that our tourists from Australia will be delighted to know that we have agreed to donate $15 US from each travelers’ payment towards CV’s National Bushfire Recovery fund. The donation will apply to our most favorite holiday of South Caucasus’ all three countries – Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan small group tour.
This in no way will increase the price of the tour. We’ll be allocating these funds deducted from our own commission.

Conservation Volunteers (CV) is a not-for-profit that has been strengthening the health of communities and ecosystems for mutual benefit for the past 38 years around Australia. With the 2019/2020 horrendous bushfires that have devastated Australia’s communities, wildlife and the environment, CV has been working with its partners to assess and identify the damage and will be implementing environmental projects that will support bushfire recovery in the long term.
CV created the national bushfire recovery appeal to support Australian communities aiming to re-establish and protect surviving habitat and provide urgently needed help to wildlife in fire affected areas. People can view details and donate here

Considering city break? Consider Tbilisi!

The Telegraph (UK) has just published an exciting piece portraying our capital Tbilisi as a must-go city break destination. Author suggests Englishmen to put aside Barcelona and Berlin and turn their sights onto “Rome of the Caucasus”. Indeed our home town has a lot to offer. Travelers from all over the world are discovering this relatively new tourism destination with a high level of enthusiasm. English newspaper brought some statistics too – showing the graph of world’s fastest growing travel destinations. And Georgia is in the top 3.

Kaye Holland did an amazing job putting together the list of available accommodation options, eat & drink places, sightseeing suggestions, etc. And although most of the mentions are for those preferring luxury, there are one or two offers for those with a tighter budget.

We’re happy to extend this offer. And not just for travelers from the UK, but the rest of the world 🙂 It is true that London to Tbilisi flights are now run two times a week (Wednesday and Saturday) from Gatwick airport directly. But the Georgian Airways company has direct flights from both Berlin and Barcelona, as well as from Vienna, Brussels and Tel-Aviv. Caucasus guide

Are Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan (known together as Caucasus region) on your 2025 Travel Wishlist? If the answer is “yes” then most probably you have already heard how versatile and amazing Caucasus is.
Three relatively small countries are nested between Caspian and Black seas on the East and the West, picturesque Caucasus mountain range on the North, and Biblical Ararat mountain on the South. The area boasts one of the largest natural diversity in the world. With gorgeous mountains, miles of vine valleys, magnificent rivers, mythical semi-deserts, and more, Caucasus is the place for repeat exploration.
Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan each are gaining momentum of tourism growth. Georgia is becoming a hot spot for both classic tourism and responsible travelers alike. Armenia strikes with one-of-a-kind architecture. Whilst Azerbaijan is almost like a world-apart within the three. However, be ready to experience unique hospitality, fairytale-like nature, amazing cuisine, and fascinating journey overall – in each of them.

Tangerines in Georgia

Georgia tangerines are ready to be picked up

Georgia is famous for its tangerines. That’s right! Not only winemaking and ancient tourist attractions comprise a global brand of our country. For years now the mountainous region of Adjara is a home to tons of this delicious fruit.
November and December are the months tangerines are ready to be harvested. From 50 to 55 thousand tons of citrus harvest are expected in Adjara this year. Tangerines are sold both domestically, and are also exported to Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to regional TV report this year it is also planned to organize the export of tangerines to Latvia and Poland.

Traveling for tangerines
Tourism sector and local communities are also about to benefit from growing interest in this winter citrus fruit. More and more travelers are turning their journey agenda to what’s called farm tourism. And harvesting activities are something of a particular interest.
Travelers on “Tea, tangerines and more” 8-day tour to Georgia (see the tour) emphasize the excitement of the process. There is hardly something else to compare a full day on a high hill, overlooking Black Sea, picking up tangerines and enjoying local lunch afterwards.

Sustainable tourism in action
Being a responsible traveler is truly magical feeling. Especially when you realize that money you spent stay local. Our host farmers in Adjara region were really amazed with an opportunity to welcome international guests. Opportunity to share routine of their daily life, to find an additional source of income, and potentially spread more word about Georgian tangerines. These all result in an amazing experience for travelers.

MyWine is your wine

Geotrend continues to take active part in local initiatives that are focused on supporting local communities, small entrepreneurs, farming and agriculture. Being a responsible tourism followers we carefully select projects and ideas that would benefit local communities through tourism.
Our selection of Georgia wine tours are a perfect example of this approach. And now we are honored to become supporters of a small but surely to-be-successful initiative of promoting Georgian indigenous vines among international audience.
MyWine – is an opportunity for our travelers to not only enjoy Georgian wine while in Georgia. This is a chance to support local winemaking by financing a vine planting. In return, as a supporter, you get a vine under your name in Georgia; and your own branded wine delivered to your home.

We are three childhood friends: Ilia, Luka, and Bacho from Georgia, the country in which 6000 BC the world’s first wine was produced. Making wine is our passion. We enjoy finding the right balance between old Georgian tradition and modern winemaking.Every day we wake up and ask ourselves: “What is it that the whole world needs and our talent can provide?” And this is what motivates us to wake up every day in the early morning and transfer our philosophy into a bottle of wine.MyWine initiators

Touring Caucasus: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan

18/10/2022
Caucasus guide

Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan refer to the region of the South Caucasus. This area is a melting pot of cultures lodged between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, where the West (Europe) meets the East (Asia). Even though we began by offering Small Group Tour Travels only to the beautiful and culturally rich nation of Georgia, we sought to offer our esteemed customers value by extending our small group tours to include Armenia and Azerbaijan. The decision to extend Small Group Tour Travels was also influenced by the geographical proximity and the small size of the three countries, which allows travelers to visit most, if not all, of the attractions and historical monuments within these nations. Most importantly, visiting all three countries at once offers travelers an invaluable opportunity to sample and compare all the different natural sites, cuisines and cultural customs.
Why travel to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan?
The South Caucasus offers a melange of Eurasian culture with uniquely distinct cuisines and cultural customs that emerged as different communities met centuries ago, interacted, and evolved with time. Additionally, touring Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan provides the opportunity to explore incredible natural attractions and some of the most important historical monuments and destinations in the Caucasus region all in a single trip. A tour to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan offers travelers with a learning opportunity on a portion of the history of human civilization that has not been emphasized or given the attention it deserves by modern society. In a sense, touring ancient and historical monuments in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan can be regarded as paying homage to our ancestors for their contribution in laying the foundation of the modern civilization we cherish and enjoy today.

Agri Tours in Georgia: travel, experience and support

Agri tours, alternatively known as farm tours, are a key part of our responsible tourism practice in Georgia. Tourism brings additional positive impact for local communities’ development in Georgia. And Georgian farmers in return wholeheartedly welcoming travelers. Farmers, cheese- and honey-makers, tea and tangerine growers, artisans and small hospitality entrepreneurs are all keen to showcase their produce.

Geotrend understands the importance of traditional agricultural practices not only to the economy but also in promoting the sustainability of local communities. We are committed to preserving and promoting traditional farming practices in Georgia and Caucasus.

To this end, Geotrend offers Agri Tours in Georgia to support small farmers and local farming communities. Farm Tours offer you a perfect opportunity to learn traditional Georgian farming practices and traditional processes used in winemaking, tea-making, and preparation of local cuisines.
Most importantly, you will be contributing to the economic sustainability of local farming communities and the preservation of the rich and intriguing culture of these communities.
Why is it important to preserve and promote traditional farming practices?
For centuries, local communities relied primarily on traditional farming as the main economic activity with a majority currently depending on agriculture to make ends meet. Apart from the economic contribution of small traditional farmers, there are solid environmental and cultural reasons for supporting them. Traditional farmers are renowned for using eco-friendly farming practices. This is particularly important in the current society threatened by the negative effects of climate change and global warming contributed by environmental degradation.

In a sense, offering modern society an opportunity to learn traditional farming practices contributes to global efforts to combat negative effects.

Small group tours – choice of a responsible traveler

Small group tours in contrast with more common larger group journeys are much better option from all aspects. You still pay less tour price than that of a private tour, but at the same time get tailored care and attention from your tour manager and local guide. Plus, and this is in our view the most important aspect – you become a part of a small but growing number of responsible travelers.
Group tour size
Tours we organize are small enough to make you feel like an individual tourist. But at the same time they are big enough for you to socialize and share impressions with others on the route. Our group tours size usually do not exceed 10 people at one time. There are a lot of reasons why we have chosen number 10 as our maximum.
Perfect balance
Small group tour size of no more than 10 people lets you interact with the rest of your group peers. And it won’t be felt like you are just one of those many in huge coach being transferred from one place to another. In a group of 10 people it is also easier for us to meet maximum of your travel needs, as well as along-the-way sudden requests. Whilst with the bigger traveling parties it is not always possible. And – if you are traveling alone, on a small group tour you won’t be 🙂 Chances are you meet someone who likes to explore this world just like yourself.
Responsible travel
As a company and team, we are all about responsible tourism. We carefully select our local partners among likeminded people. We work towards supporting Georgian regions sustainable development through tourism. Important aspect of our responsible operations is local environment protection. Hospitality first – “Guest is from the God” as local Georgian saying goes.

Sunny, warm, exceptional, truly authentic, historically rich, traditional and at the same time modern; unique Georgian wine, amazing theaters, opera house, fascinating residences, many museums, versatile lifestyles and exceptional architecture – these are the exact words visitors and tourists from all over the world are using to describe Georgia.

“City that loves you” – the very first phrase one will see when hopping off the board of a plane and entering Tbilisi international airport. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is bustling. Whatever the reason for your travel to Georgia is – tourism or business – you are going to surely enjoy this wonderful, contemporary and historical city in the heart of the Caucasus. The most entertaining and fascinating part of the Georgian capital is, of course, its historical Tbilisi area – old town, where churches of a considerable number of religious denominations stand together, where past coexists with present in natural harmony. Sulphur Baths “Abanotubani” environment is the place Tbilisi started its history and become named after. On the opposite side of the baths you’ll see Metekhi Church with a statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali – the founding father of Tbilisi. Remember to hike (can be substituted by cable car ride) up the Narikala Fortress and enjoy amazing views of the city and the river Mtkvari (also known under the name Kura).

Coming down from the fortress is a separate experience worth mentioning – walking over the old narrow streets, passing by the Mosque and taking stairs down the “Fig’s ravine” to see the waterfall – sudden natural miracle in the middle of the busy city, hidden behind the hill.

Walk over to the Sharden district of the old town and choose a lunch place from an amazing number of versatile cafes, bars, restaurants –

Being a responsible traveler

Responsible traveler is a term that now many travel companies worldwide use. We want to highlight some of the points that identify a traveler who wants to be engaged in much-needed currently responsible traveling. It is now a known fact that many tourism destinations worldwide, including Georgia, are facing such global problem as over-tourism. This, in most cases, leads to a bigger problem of local environment damage. Tourism companies are among those who are responsible for preservation and conservation of places they sell tours to. Sustainable and responsible tourism is all about that.
Visiting and discovering new countries like Georgia, and learning about its culture, and experiencing new things is something that may change your perspective on life in general. But, at the same time, understanding the importance of being a responsible traveler is vital. Travel companies as well as travelers need to ensure that tours also leave a positive impact on the places. Responsible travel and sustainable tourism are topics on a rise right now. Tours to Georgia are gaining momentum and with more and more people visiting Georgia, this is something that everyone should consider before taking on a holiday deal in Georgia.
We took a liberty of putting together some responsible traveler tips (these can be applied to any travel destination in the world, and not only Georgia):
Lower Your Carbon Footprint
While governments are still debating about wether to tackle climate change or not, this is already a reality. Climate change is unfortunately happening. And there are small things you can do to offset your impact when you travel. Instead of taking a taxi to get around when you’re traveling, consider other options for public transport, train, or use our services – as we employ only hybrid engine vehicles or those with the most

$1.6 million project to support Ecotourism in Georgia

National parks of Georgia and Ecotourism segment are getting a massive development boost. Much needed in light of international visitor’s growth prospect. United States Department of the Interior (DOI) has been providing assistance on critical conservation efforts across Europe. And it is a timely initiative now to support development of Georgia’s National park’s infrastructure for recreation and tourism.
International tourists with a higher level of environmental awareness are turning their eyes on Georgia. The country has a lot to offer. And Protected areas are a true gem.

River in Lagodekhi Protected Areas
With the support of the USAID in Georgia, a new project for the development of protected areas called “National Parks and Eco-Tourism” was launched in Autumn 2019. The 5-year project will reportedly cost 1.6 million US dollars.
“As part of the strategic Georgian-American partnership, the US Embassy has long been happy to help Georgia develop a sustainable economy. Protection and development of natural territories is one of the components of economic development. I am pleased that with the support of USAID, we are launching a new project to promote the development of Georgian protected areas, improve the governance system and sustainable development. This project will be very important for the economic development and sustainability of local communities”, said US Ambassador to Georgia Elisabeth Rood.USAID Mission Director added that the Agency has identified specific goals and objectives for Georgia, which are aimed at building the country’s potential.
“Protected areas are the treasures of Georgia that need protection and development. The project is also important in terms of creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in the country. It will serve as another example of our support to Georgia”, said Peter Wibler.

Ajameti nature reserve

Supporting Ajameti

In line with our ongoing efforts to turn all Geotrend operations green, eco-friendly and in responsible travel fashion, we are happy to make this announcement.
Starting from 2019 we will be allocating part of our income from tours in Georgia to the project run by Treepex in our country. Which is – Rehabilitation of Georgian oaks in Ajameti protected areas.
So, each time you book one of our small group tours you show yourself a responsible traveler to Georgia, and help us contribute to the conservation of one of many amazing nature reserves in our country.

Ajameti Managed Reserve is located 230 km away from Tbilisi,  the capital of Georgia and it was formed as a strict nature reserve in 1946 to preserve rare and relict Imeretian Oak and Zelkova trees. The famous oaks of Ajameti are ancient natural treasures, with some of the trees being over 250 years old.In Ajameti Protected Areas we are planting and rehabilitating Georgian Oak (Quercus iberica), Imeretian Oak (Quercus imeretina) and Zelkova (Zelcova carpinifolia), the latter two species are endemic and endangered species and member of the Red List of Georgia.

Why Train Tours Matter

Riding the Rails Towards Responsible Discovery: Why Train Tours Matter, Especially in Georgia

In an era where the impact of our travels is under increasing scrutiny, the call for responsible tourism has never been louder. Travelers are seeking more than just picturesque destinations; they desire experiences that minimize negative footprints, support local communities, and foster a deeper connection with the places they visit. Among the various approaches to mindful exploration, train tours are emerging as a powerful and inherently sustainable option, and their potential in a country as captivating as Georgia is particularly significant.
The Sustainable Advantage of Train Travel
The beauty of train travel lies in its inherent efficiency and lower environmental impact compared to other common modes of transportation, particularly air travel and large coach tours. By choosing to journey through Georgia’s diverse landscapes by rail, travelers actively contribute to reducing carbon emissions and alleviating pressure on road infrastructure. This seemingly simple choice has a ripple effect, helping to preserve the natural beauty that draws visitors to Georgia in the first place.

Connecting with the Local Fabric at a Gentle Pace
Beyond the environmental benefits, train tours offer a unique opportunity to engage with the local fabric of a destination. The rhythm of train travel encourages a slower pace, allowing passengers to truly absorb the changing scenery and the nuances of the journey. In Georgia, this translates to leisurely gliding past rolling vineyards, alongside rushing rivers, and through the foothills of the majestic Caucasus Mountains – vistas often missed when rushing from one point to another.
Empowering Local Economies Along the Railway
Furthermore, well-designed train tours naturally lend themselves to supporting local economies. The infrastructure of railway lines often connects smaller towns and rural areas, opening up opportunities for
