Tour program

DAY 1: travel from Tbilisi to Guria

Guria

09:00 am – departure from Tbilisi (meeting point: Republic Square). The road from Tbilisi to Ozurgeti, major town in Guria, takes about 4.5 hours. And so no one is bored during the long journey we have scheduled some interesting stops along the way.

When on Rikoti mountain pass we will visit a 9th century monastery in the village called Ubisa. Architectural style of the monastery is visibly different from that you usually see in Georgia. The Ubisa monastery, otherwise known as St. George Church, was built during the rule of Abkhazian Kings, and now famous with its unique ancient frescoes.

Further down the road we will make a stop in a small and cozy local cafe for lunch. After our meals we will keep on with the journey and at about 3:30 pm will arrive in the village called Shroma – our Guria tour’s starting point.

Our acquaintance with the region will commence by visiting a Soviet-time old tea plantations (there were 14 of them back then), and the tea history in Georgia. And although relatively young – tea was introduced here in the middle of 19th century – it quickly became one of the biggest agricultural product in the country. And even managed to compete with famous Georgian wine in its popularity and awareness level. We will get to see the partly abandoned building of Institute of Tea and Subtropical crops, now being a part of picturesque surroundings.

In the evening we will arrive to the hotel in Ozurgeti for rest and overnight.

DAY 2: Tangerine harvest and Tea tasting

After breakfast we will drive deep into Guria, following beautiful road until a small village called Achi. Visit to the small local 17th century Church, highly appreciated by locals and decorated with almost 300-year old frescoes of St. George.

Our tour will be continued with the visit to a traditional Gurian house with the big garden full of tangerine trees, in the Likhauri village. This is where you will have a chance to harvest some tangerines, drink home-made coffee, eat some deserts and simply enjoy the surroundings. Tangerines, along with hazelnuts, are currently considered to be the main agricultural produce in Guria. They are distingueshed by its natural taste and color.

After couple of hours of being engaged in a true local activity, we will make a short transfer to the neighbouring Tsitelmta village. Our host Lika is a true Georgian tea revival enthusiast. Her mother, Mary, during Soviet times was a senior technologist in local tea factory in Ozurgeti. This traditional home will expect us for amazing lunch, interesting stories about tea in Georgia, as well as their own tea tastings and some other surprises 🙂

At the end of this day we will drive up the Shemokmedi monastery to observe Guria from above, in the warm lights of Sunset. Return to the hotel for overnight.

DAY 3: Return to Tbilisi

Following breakfast we will head back towards Tbilisi. But before we leave Guria, ther are some interesting locations to discover in Ozurgeti – the smallest of all regional centers of Georgia.

Local market – is an ideal place to buy some hazelnuts. These are gradually becoming Georgia’s another export product. We will then take a brief walk through Ozurgeti’s Platanus Garden. It was set up by a Scottish professional in the 19th century by the order of Prince Mamia the Third Gurieli.

His royal palace buil in 1860s still stands at the end of the garden, but currently serves as one of the administrative buildings of Georgian Orthodox Church. This is actually the oldets building in Ozurgeti. And although modern renovations made it look somehow different, you will still have a chance to see what it looked like – our guide will show you the pictures, so you can compare.

After that we will depart to Tbilisi. Approximate arrival around 08:00 pm. END OF TOUR
